Consiste nel prelievo dalle ossa del bacino e viene effettuato in anestesia (epidurale o generale) con un breve intervento della durata di circa 45 minuti. Dopo il prelievo, il midollo osseo prelevato si ricostituisce spontaneamente entro 7-10 giorni.Cosa rischia un donatore di midollo osseo?

La quantità di sangue midollare¬† che viene prelevata varia in funzione del peso del ricevente (0,7-1 litro), ovviamente senza poter mai superare una dose di sicurezza determinata dal peso del donatore. La tipizzazione registra i possibili donatori di midollo osseo in un registro internazionale. Solo una persona ogni 100.000 è compatibile con chi è in attesa di un trapianto, ma nella rara eventualità si viene contattati per effettuare un prelievo. Per diventare donatori basta rivolgersi a un Servizio Trasfusionale dedicato all'arruolamento di donatori a scopo di trapianto. Il paziente ed i suoi familiari (di regola genitori e fratelli) vengono sottoposti ad indagini di laboratorio (tipizzazione HLA) per valutare se esiste fra di loro un possibile donatore.
